The 24-hour interval after Texas experiencedweirdly fond temperatures and Christmas tornadoes , a blizzard slammed across the western part of the state . A 12 mass were shoot down by the storms , and now , another tragic dying toll has been reported : More than 35,000 dairy cows misplace their life .
TheNew York Times reportsthat it was not necessarily the cold temperatures that belt down the Bos taurus , although some froze to death , but the the fact that ranchers could not get to the cow with food in the very cryptical , quickly accumulating nose candy , which drifted to over 14 foot in some places . From the NYT :
Farmers train as best they could — put down extra bedding behind wind breaks , site extra bales of hay in front of calf bungalows and in places where snow typically amass .

But as the blizzard vex on , cow that had seek shelter behind windbreakers were buried alive by ramble C. P. Snow . Others froze to end on open fields . calf that had been nestle inside hutches went hungry because no one could reach them .
Farmer who tried to rescue their animals became disorientate and lose on their own land .
Early reportsestimated the dying at about 15,000 kine , but as more calves are being see in the melting snow , the figures are now closer to 35,000 , or about 10 percentage of all dairy cow in the region . The big problem now becomes how to dispose of the carcasses . The animals have not been raised for their substance so it ’s more likely they ’d manoeuvre to a rendering plant to be turn into animal feed or other products .

The surviving moo-cow will likely see a dip in milk supply because they were not milk regularly for two or more days . But customers will likely not see an step-up in prices for milk or other dairy products , according to the agricultural economic expert David Anderson from Texas A&M University .
Although storms like this are rare , it ’s concerning from an animal eudaemonia perspective that so many kine might be killed this way . Dairy cows are pass on to browse outdoors , even in winter , but can be brought inside barns during knockout conditions . Unfortunately this storm came on too tight . Withstronger storms expected this winter due to El Niño , ranchers ask to find a path to keep their animals — and themselves — safe .
