Reader Devin Vermeulen and I have been trying to figure this out this morning and I think I ’d come about it on to you while I shell out with the 6,000 + written mails that Gmail wo n’t filter out for this TomTomGo contest . My guessing was that something funky had work sour in the Airport Express itself , because it does n’t broadcast an FM signal at all , but transmits ( or recieves , I pretend ) an encrypted information stream over Wi - Fi . It ’s very peculiar . find free to send in your theory if you are an EE genius .

I recently buy an Apple Airport Express Base Station , and after installing it in my firm , whenever I send off music to it over the airtunes there is some FM radio preventive on the signal- you could totally find out it under the itunes music being sent from my laptop but only when a Sung dynasty is playing on ituines . And it ’s not interference from the receiver because I ’ve hear to change the tuner dial and do it again but it constantly beak up the same speculative r&b station ( I have n’t yet estimate out which one ) Anyway- do you think it ’s just some of New York ’s over contaminated wireless signals being so crazy that they ’re infiltrate my wireless music stream or is there something I can do to specify this unbelievably bothersome position . permit me tell you , when it ’s 10 am on a Saturday and all I want is some ambient electronica to slowly inflame me , the sound of “ Little Lou Bega ” fuzzily breaking in the background is far from the idealistic state of affairs I thought airtunes would bestow me to .

I have n’t tried it with headphones further away from my animation elbow room , I should do that this even . The thing is it did n’t materialize for the first 2 weeks or so we had it and then all of a sudden it started . I was dumbfounded how it could be an FM signal of all noises . I hook the reference cord from my powerbook to the unit so I could at least move it off the paries plug away some distance but with only the 2 or 3 human foot radius it made no difference whatsoever .

i surmise this has nothing to do with the wireless part of the airport / airtunes , but is more likely that something is n’t grounded in good order in the electric system at his house . mostly address if that was the typeface it would happen all of the time ( and not just when medicine is spiel ) but it could very well be that whatever chipset is being used is shutting off that signal path alone unless it is in manipulation . that would explain why it only pass off when euphony is playing .

if it is due to a earthing issue then it would always be the same wireless station ( usually the strongest one in the area ) disregarding of what was play , what outlet it was plugged into , etc . I have this trouble myself on certain outlets .

if he does n’t hear it through his stereo system ( he should try twist it up all the way without anything play to see if it ’s there ) then it could be specific to the outlet / circuit the airport is plugged into , and/or something could have change ( i.e. – perhaps a icebox or something else is causing noise ) or perhaps the aerodrome is just more sensible to RFI . he could do a change of things to help resolve it , but assuming he does n’t own the wiring probably the good thing to do is either get a special RFI / EMI filtering mercantile establishment and rewire wherever he put the drome , or run it through a UPS or great power conditioner ( that way it will get convert to DC then back to AC cleanly ) .

power conditioning is always a good estimate for any audio program , because even if it is n’t to a degree where it ’s observably degrading the sound quality , it is always present to some degree as part of the noise story .

My schematic headphone lengthiness cord break away from my CPU to my stereo does the same matter . You do not need the Airport to create the problem . As far as I can recite , it has to do with the insulation of the electric cord itself fly the coop from the Airport / CPU to the stereo . I do n’t hear it with other input , but I can get word it whether or not music is playing . He should try a new cord , different length cord , or something to change the gene linkage . The conducting wire could also be foot it up from something else nearby .

Eric Bakken writes :

The cause of this is almost definatly the wires plug into the airdrome expressage to the stereo . I used to have a recollective stereo mini fire hydrant — - > RCA jacks conk into my stereo system from computer and the same matter would come about . The distance and quality of the cord will make a difference . We are using a monster cable television patch corduroy from the limited to stereo and have no problems with interference . expend serious money on that stereo - mini plug to RCA inputs or use Apple ’s other audio tie-in cable , and the FM interference will go away .

In regard to your story “ Airport Express Picking Up FM ” — it ’s not just him , and it ’s not just New York . I live in Los Angeles , and the same thing take place to me ; it ’s drives me up the fucking wall . I finally figured out that it seems to pick up FM stations whenever it ’s plugged into my A / 5 receiver , and when the USB cable connected to my printer is also plug in . A weird combination of improperly shielded line , maybe . But all I know is that I have to disconnect my printer from the Airport Express everytime I want to use it to rain cats and dogs euphony , or I ’m in for an afternoon of Korean spiritual wireless .

sound like the cables should be screen .
