The uncovering of 24 bronze statues in an ancient thermal spring in Tuscany could redefine our understanding of the kickoff of theRoman Empire . date to around 2,300 class ago , the unbelievable figures provide unexampled evidence that the ancient Romans may have prayed alongside their old enemy theEtruscans , even in times of warfare .

Though major opening be in our knowledge of the Etruscans , this cryptic civilization is believed to have been the first major great power in the Mediterranean . Hailing from Etruria – which spanned northern and central Italy – the Etruscans establish many of the area ’s iconic cities , including Florence and Pisa , and laid the foundations for the nimbus of Rome .

In spitefulness of their achievements , however , the Etruscans were eventually defeated by the Romans after a protracted full stop of conflict that continued throughout the first and 2d centuries BCE .

The freshly light upon statue were found in the sacred baths of San Casciano dei Bagni near Siena , some 160 klick ( 100 miles ) compass north of Rome . Many of the pieces depictedGreco - Roman Catholic godssuch as Apollo and Igea – the goddess of health – and bore lettering in both Etruscan and Latin .

Commenting on the importance of this determination toAP , task coordinator Jacopo Tabolli explain that " while there were social and civil wars being fought outside the sanctuary … inside the asylum the great elite Etruscan and Roman families prayed together in a context of use of ataraxis surrounded by conflict . "

" This possibility to rewrite the relationship and dialectic between the Etruscan and Romans is an exceptional opportunity , " he said .

Alongside the bronze statue – which stay in excellent condition thanks to the mud which has incase them for over two millennia – the researchers also discovered 5,000 amber , silver and bronze coin . And while some statues portray immortal , others represented human body parts and were in all likelihood offered to the gods during occult arts healing ceremonies .

" This is almost an X - light beam of the human inside from the lung to the bowel , " order Massimo Osanna from the Italian Ministry of Culture in reference to a bronze depiction of the respiratory system of rules . " There are spike and other anatomical parts like hands . So , all these things that alterative waters and the intervention of the divinities would have been capable to save . "

The artefact are currently undergo restoration work at a nearby laboratory , and will soon be displayed in a make novel museum in San Casciano .
