It was attach to go on sooner or afterward , but it appears AT&T is ready to commence transitioning users off their 2 G bound web and getting them onto their 3 G HSPA mesh . Letters went out this past weekencouraging people to upgradebecause their voice and information quality might suffer degradation . But why now ? GigaOM thinksit ’s a moveto complimentary up available internet spectrum .
As Kevin Fitchard points out , part of the reason AT&T wanted to bribe T - Mobile to increase the capacitance of their web . Which is to say , they wanted to be able to better treat more voice and datum activity at any given time . But that did n’t hap . By shutting down their 2 G networks , they would free up plenty of space to promote and improve execution for 3 G client .
If AT&T is shutting down a significant luck of 2 G connection , it may have found an reply to its electrical capacity job – at least in part . If it ca n’t corrupt young 4 G airwaves , then it can cannibalize its older networks , harvesting their worthful frequencies for raw HSPA and LTE capacity . That ’s precisely the approaching T - Mobile plans to take to get to LTE . When all is said and done , T - Mobile will have a splinter of GSM connection remaining , but it will have an even bigger HSPA+ than it runs today , as well as an LTE connection on equation with AT&T ’s and Sprint ’s ’ .

AT&T says that they ’ve only send out out notices to New York customers for the time being , and will only send out more to a small group , but the message is clear : Now that 3 gigabyte has amply matured and 4 G is on its way in , it ’s prison term for 2 G to go . [ MarketWatchviaGigaOM ]
