Eight years ago , director Joe Cornishblew our freaking mindswith hislandmark directorial entry , Attack the Block . Now , finally , his second movie is here and while the delay was exceedingly long , the story is worth it .
Cornish ’s soph motion picture , which he indite and directed , opens Friday and is calledThe Kid Who Would Be King . It ’s a tale of a young boy ( Louis Ashbourne Serkis ) who pulls a sword from a rock and finds himself in a mod reimagining of the caption of King Arthur . The film is a rare trade good in Hollywood these twenty-four hour period : an original , comparatively big - budget studio apartment film with a mostly unknown form , most of whom are kids ( though yes , it does also star Patrick Stewart and Rebecca Ferguson ) . Immediately after Attack the Block was released , Cornish and Edgar Wright focus on writing Ant - Man for Marvel , a human relationship that unhappily , but famously , fell apart . So while it may seem to fans like he ’s been ride around waiting to make a new motion picture , that ’s not the case .
“ If you call back about it , we exited Ant - Man about 2014 , I start up pre - production on this in 2016 so I would have been writing it in 2015 , ” Cornish told io9 over the telephone set this workweek . “ So , weirdly , I agreeit ’s a long timebut also they were very , very , very busy year . ” Out of all those undertaking , Cornish think The Kid Who Would Be King finally became his second movie because even among those big franchises , this story in particular holds a special place in his heart .
As a kid , the writer - music director saw both Steven Spielberg’sE.T. The Extra - Terrestrialand John Boorman ’s Excalibur around the same time and his fertile imagination dreamt up a kind of hybrid , a movie about a youngster in the King Arthur myth . “ It was kind of my wish - fulfilment movie , ” Cornish said . “ It ’s a wish - fulfillment account for the Thomas Kyd in the movie but it ’s also a bid - fulfillment story for its film director who intend of it eld 12 or 13 . ”

Not only is The Kid Who Would Be King inspire by family - favorable fantasy film of the ‘ 80s , it authentically feel like one too , which was important to Cornish . He , like many of us , has noticed that Hollywood rarely makes hot - activity movies for kids , starring kids , any longer .
“ I remember so fondly the experience of going to the moving picture and seeing myself onscreen when I was a Thomas Kyd , ” he said . “ I was about the same years as Henry Thomas in E.T. and as Kelly Reno in The Black Stallion and all these great movies that were for kids with kids in them . Films that had the audience in them . And I miss that . I wanted to bring it back . ”
Now , obviously , there are film made for kids these twenty-four hour period . They just are n’t movies likeThe Gooniesor Gremlins or The Sandlot . Either adults asterisk in kid - friendly stories ( such as many superhero films ) or the flick are animated . Cornish did n’t desire either of those things .
“ I opine it ’s crucial for kids to see the real world reflected and their real experiences reflect , especially in fantasy moving-picture show , ” he said . “ I do n’t know about you but when I was a minor , I would imagine wonderful thing happening in my life all the time . That ’s what kept my imaginativeness alive and that ’s what kept me reasonable , really , as a tyke . So it ’s important for phantasy to connect to kid reality . If they ’re just fed a dieting of adult in Spandex and alive CGI characters , I ’m not sure it ’s quite as nourishing as what our generation got . ”
To really understand today ’s generation of nipper , Cornish and his producer Nira Park went to the source . They visited various schools and take kids what they did or did n’t be intimate aboutKing Arthur , the Sword in the Stone , Knights of the Roundtable , all of it .
“ All the kids we spoke to knew the caption of the sword in the Edward Durell Stone but , when you ask them what it meant , they got a little chip confused , ” Cornish said . “ It ’s such an archaic idea . Such a weird gimmick for select a baron … [ Plus ] there ’s already a Royal Family and that is not how the Royal Family is chosen . ”

That they have to dream they ’re in secret princesses or secretly heir to or orphaned from these amazing families . ”
“ Really what we should be telling kids is it does n’t matter who your parents are or where you were born , ” he continues . “ It ’s about what you do and what decisions you make . You ’re your own person , really . That things should be meritocratic not hereditary . So that was the idea , to overturn that notion and countenance the kids in my movie rewrite that mythology for themselves . ”
In The Kid Who Would Be King , anyone can be king . Much likea nobody raise on Jakkucan be the last Jedi , or “ you’re able to jade the mask . ”
In fact , the idea of rewrite your own mythology spreads out of this movie and into Cornish ’s career as well .
