Since 2006 , there have been 60,000 people kill in drug - related violence in Mexico . That ’s actually aconservative estimate . Some think it ’s closer to 70,000 . And that may not let in the missing , up to 10,000 more Mexicans who have simply vanish . In fact , if the newMemorial of the Victims of the Violence in Mexicolisted the epithet of those killed in its drug warfare , there would be at least as many names there as are bump on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C.
But at this memorial , there are no name . While many of the dead include law enforcement official , border patrol broker , and free bystanders , a large number of the at rest are convicted killer whale , mob members , organized crime headpin . Victims also , perhaps , of a corrupt politics ? And with no clean way to definewho the dupe of the drug war are , add name becomes problematic . Activist Isabel Miranda de Wallace , whose Logos was kidnapped and killed , phrase the issueto the Los Angeles Times : She would not want her boy ’s name alongside that of a combine hit mankind .
concord to the architect , the memorial — which was pay for with money seized from trust — seeks not to itemise the lives miss , but to become a conversation about the violence the country has suffered .

The memorial , which was designed byGaeta Springall Arquitectos , is made from 70 piece of weathered of Corten brand , some raw , some with mirrors on their sides . Concrete paseo meander through the panel , past benches , swatches of grass and pool of pee . It ’s much like a disunited Richard Serra carving , although here , visitors are able-bodied to interact with the slow rusting monolith . A message on one of the slabs advance visitors to “ Pinta lo que sientes … expresa lo que piensas ” : “ Paint what you experience … give tongue to what you think . ” So among the ( lasting ) quotes from writer and thinkers on peace like Gandhi and Octavio Paz are inscriptions result in glass or paint or etched into the blade from whoever has something to say .
Although it ’s been open since April , the memorial has not yet been overrun by graffiti , as one might look . But as arecent level in the New York Timesnotes , like any unresolved comment yarn , the message are still not completely on - topic . The narration list some of the audience part , which grade from political comment , to personal memories of the slain by kinfolk and friend , to a groundsman who care to draw Gene Simmons when he begin bored . While the etchings stick around , the methamphetamine hydrochloride fades slowly off over time , leave persistent , ghostly effigy .
Memorials do n’t always name or enumerate the gone , of course : the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe honors millions anonymously with 2711 concrete slabs ( a bit thatdoesn’t stand for anything ; even architect Peter Eisenman hasoffered several different account ) . But in this case , it ’s not only a affair of not know all the gens of the dead or missing , it ’s that so many details about these deaths are never reported . The relatives of victims do n’t desire their house names to be tie in with crime sprees . Mexican cities and country do n’t want to be known as serious places . Plus , the government believes that the media sensationalizes the violence , so reporting is often purposely oppress .

Maybe that ’s why the memorial is tucked away in a corner of Chapultapec Park , according to Alec Perkins , whowrites about the remembrance at Archinect , “ where unless you know where to bet for it , you are improbable to stumble across it . ” The memorial is also adjacent to a polo field of study where , he notes , your quiet contemplation may be disrupted by the crackle voice of the announcer or the wafting perfume of horse excretory product . The emplacement almost makes it seem like the memorial is supposed to be hidden from view . Some victims ’ organizationsrefuse to acknowledge this siteentirely , preferring a more prominent monument named the Tower of Light .
But this part of the park in reality belonged to Mexico ’s Ministry of Defense for age , so what was government res publica has now been devolve to the people as more than three - and - a - half Akka of public space . And according to the architects , that was a key part of the memorial ’s strategy to acknowledge force , what they call “ the heavy and open wound ” for Mexico . “ In reply to this , we purpose an open project in the internet site , open to the metropolis and open to the approbation by the citizen , ” say principal Julio Gaeta . “ The convalescence of the public infinite as well as the memorial of the victims of violence are the effect of the project . ”
The aim of the memorial — marvelous , imposing , sober up dark wall , which can almost sense like gravestones — is not unlike the Vietnam Veterans Memorial . But natter the Vietnam memorial is a cold , almost sterile experience : it does n’t call for you to linger , and it does n’t afford any seclusion . Here , the website shit all the difference . Sitting in the forest , among the shadows of the panels , is a much more informal , physical elbow room to commemorate lifespan . Even if the remembrance does n’t number public figure , by allowing verbalism on the wall it acknowledges that the wildness is a very personal bother , and creates a elbow room for Mexico ’s citizens to convey their uncensored feelings about about the interior crisis .

Mexico ’s novel President of the United States , Enrique Peña Nieto , gave hisfirst state of the nation speechthis week , six months after he was elect on a platform which vow tochange the land ’s strategyon drug vehemence . It ’s judge that homicides associated with unionized crime haveplummeted by almost 20 percentsince he have bureau , and in July , he successfullycaptured the head of the brutally violent Zetas cartel , a gravid win for his administration . But many Mexicans think they ’re find out more of the same ( see journalist Anabel Hernández ’s account book Narcoland , out this month ) .
During the 2012 U.S. presidential election , much was made about the fact that the candidatesrarely discussed Mexico ’s drug insurance policy , a trend that ’s continuedduring President Obama ’s trip-up to Mexicothis year . Perhaps speaking more openly about the drug warfare might be the first gradation in rescind a trend that ’s paralyze the country for the past decade . At this monument , the writing will quite literally be on the wall about the suffering the drug warfare has already created — in a way that the government will hopefully be unable to dismiss .
