Before Darren Aronofksy floods the world for 40 days in his film Noah , he ’ll do it in comics , too . The Noah lifelike novel , come out this on March 18th , and if the flick is anything like the comedian , it ’s bizarre , epic and Biblically accurate . Aronofksy and co - generator Ari Handel stopped by to discuss their vision .
io9 : What ’s your fascination with the Noah story ?
Darren Aronosky and Ari Handel : Destruction by piss — everything we know being washed away , but also everything being clean — we think that ’s universally bewitching . There ’s a reason why so many religions and cultures have torrent narratives . It ’s a cardinal story .
It seems like Noah is an otherworldly phantasy ; it almost look like it was set after the mail - Revelation of Saint John the Divine . Is that true ?
Actually the fib takes place BEFORE history . If you count at Genesis you see that the antediluvian world was very unlike from the world after the deluge . Human beings had life story spans of many hundreds of year , go down angels walk the solid ground and leviathan swam the seas . The rainbow Noah sees is the first rainbow of all sentence , so even the skies and atmosphere were somehow unlike before the inundation . If you ’re actually being accurate , the Noah news report does n’t take place in a Middle - Eastern desert , it takes place in this unique world . We wanted reader to finger that uniqueness and that strangeness .
You made the risible while you were waiting to get fiscal backup for the film , but what made you make up one’s mind to visualize it as a comic at all ?
We had a with child experience having Kent Williams make a vivid novel out of The Fountain , so when we were n’t sure when we ’d be able to get Noah made as a film we teamed up with Niko Henrichon to do the same thing with an early draft of our Noah script . We want to get the ideas out there .
In both the comical and movie , the design of the Ark is really unexpected . What revolutionize this flavour ?
The design comes straight out of Genesis , which discover the Ark in great detail . And what it describes is a giant rectangular boxful . The expectation many the great unwashed have in their headspring , of a houseboat with a rounded keel and a Panama ’s quarters on top , the ship we see in cartoons and kid ’s toys , that is n’t grounded in Genesis at all . And it makes sense Noah had a box not a gravy boat . He did n’t demand to steer his Ark because there was nowhere to go . All he could do was plasterer’s float .
The angels are even more bizarre . What inspired their design ?
There is a renowned , mysterious line at the offset of the Noah narrative which says that “ Nephilim walk the ground in those days … ” Nephilim means Fallen Ones and a flock of time and thought over the centuries has go into thinking about what they were and what this line was all about . A common reading is that the Nephilim were fall angels . But there ’s really no description of what they looked like . So Niko used his imagination . The only actual constraint we used is that in the bible sure other Angel Falls are report as having six wing , so we took that as a starting point .
The graphical novel is beautiful , thanks to Niko Henrichon ’s art . How much has the comedian inform the pattern of the film ?
For the most part the design of the film and the pictorial novel developed in closing off from each other . Niko really had a pile of exemption to depict the story as he saw it . In one or two instances , like the Ark itself , we gave Niko some design idea we were build up with for the film , but mostly they are two separate workplace .
account - wise , how closely will the finished movie resemble the lifelike novel ? Are there any important changes ?
The graphic novel is based on a first draught of the Noah script . While Niko was go and draw based on that early draft , we kept on writing and refining for a few years before we started filming , so the two stories diverged quite a bit . Of course they both track along with the story in Genesis so they have a lot in coarse — and the themes and characters have remain very much in line of business . But view to scene there are a heap of deviation .
Is there anything in the comic you were unable to land to the concealment ?
patently , film and comics are different media . For film there are some things , especially with immense landscape and intricate hardening , that are hard to do photographically or even with visual effect . But Niko does everything with his pen , so he was only limited by his imagination . Probably the freehanded affair that ’s in the comic that is n’t in the picture is being capable to go inside a city full of the vileness of men .
take the graphic novel , it ’s clear your Noah is a religious story , but not necessarily a Judeo - Christian chronicle . Are your prepared for the ended freak - out some masses will have about telling a Bible chronicle in this style ?
Well we started from Genesis and the millennia of religious commentary surrounding it . That ’s how we grounded our story and that was the well - leaping for the theme we were trying to lard , so it is a Judeo - Christian story in that sense . But you do n’t need to be Jewish or Christian or even spiritual to be intimate with the Noah report or be moved by the approximation of a worldwide flood punishing human race for our iniquity and threatening to wipe us out for good . That ’s part of our cultural heritage . It ’s inhume deep . And like all deep ingrain stories it continually gets retold and reinvent with each apprisal . Hopefully our telling vibrate with all sorts of people , Judaic or Christian , atheists or believers .
