David Attenborough is 93 . Over the course of his lifetime , the beloved natural historian and broadcaster has seen the planet go through unimaginable changes . Atmospheric concentrations of glasshouse gases have soared , as has the human universe , while biodiversity has declined sharply . He detail these shifts in a Modern docudrama released on Netflix on Sunday , which he calls his “ witness statement ” for the natural mankind .
The new film , David Attenborough : A Life on Our Planet , attractively and persuasively argue in favor of a fundamental reshaping of manhood ’s relationship with nature . But in doing so , it misses something more pernicious : the fact that not all of humanity are equally creditworthy for exploiting Earth .
That ’s not to say it ’s not well worth a sentry . The new movie is both deeply moving and visually sensational . In it , we ’re treated to footage of Attenborough ’s decades of adventures chronicling unbelievable ecosystems around the globe , from the Amazon rain forest to the Arctic .

As is typical for an Attenborough film , the footage is twin with equally lush recital , in which the historian explicate the ways he meet the human race shift from his up - come together - and - personal vantage point . Species that were once common became scarce and arduous to receive . More coral , under stress from unprecedentedly high ocean temperatures , begun toexpel its colorful algaeand change by reversal a deathly white . More trees were cleared for factory farm . And thanks to power plants and vehicles spewing out far more dangerous major planet - warm pollutants and the devastation of the populace ’s C cesspit , the planet has warmed by 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit ( 1 level Celsius ) in his lifetime .
“ We are facing nothing less than the prostration of the living world , ” he say in the flick .
If we continue line of work as common , by the 2030s , the Arctic could be barren of ocean icing in the summers . By the 2050s , already struggling coral reefs could all but die off completely . The film does n’t , however , explicitly discuss the unequal economic engine that ’s responsible for for the organization that determine this devastation into motility . It ’s lawful that the entire earthly concern is dependant on unsustainable systems . But the choice to move toward those organization was n’t exactly made democratically . Monocultural industrial agriculture , for example , is the product ofviolent land grabsandslavery , and the shift toward it hasimpoverishedmanyfarming community of interests around the Earth .
