Karen Gillanmust fight herself to the expiry . That ’s the premise of Dual , a eldritch , shady , new sci - fi filmfrom director Riley Stearns ( The artistic creation of Self - Defense).Gillan play Sarah , a disordered woman who is diagnosed with a last sickness . She ’s going to die , there ’s no way around it . And so she does what many people do in the world of Dual . Finance a clone she can trainto become her , so her death wo n’t be as painful for her loved ones . Which goes fine , until Sarah miraculously convalesce . And now one Sarah has to go .
From the very first anatomy , Stearns has a very clear visual sense of what this world is and how the story will be told . Could he tell this taradiddle as a neat activeness flick ? Sure . Butright off the cricket bat there ’s humour , there ’s sadness , and Sarah is the perfect conduit . She ’s the kind of individual who at some point had a well-chosen life but somehow lease it steal off , which the people around her can experience . So as this young second Sarah comes into the commixture , it ’s easy to see why she fits in even undecomposed than the master . She ’s Sarah without the luggage of life , so it ’s almost like she ’s get along human face to face with an honest-to-goodness version of herself .
Some of the best parts of Dual are the exploration of what it means to have two unlike version of you exist at the same clock time . Which , as you’re able to imagine , result mostly in a lot of very sticky moments , and some funny one too . This might be a big sci - fi idea , but it ’s say in a grounded , familiar parcel , which makes it all that much more impactful .

Dual has even more fun when we memorize about the duel between the two Sarahs . The rule of it , why it has to encounter , how it hap , and what the result is . That ’s where Aaron ’s Paul ’s character jibe in . Paul play a trainer whose job is to train people for these duels . And as Sarah trains with him , the world becomes even more compelling as she beings to make her erstwhile life is not as spoilt as she think .
It ’s important to remember , though , that the film is name “ Dual , ” not “ Duel . ” While the “ affaire d’honneur ” is the carrot on a stick , Sterns is more concerned in exploring the implications of the duality . Through his lens , we see both sides of a singular existence and , as a final result , can begin to really guess about our own lives . Which , accord to the filmmaking , might not be as bad as we think .
Gillan is excellentas both Sarahs , neither of which are peculiarly bang-up people , but both of which have a worthy human race . Paul adds fun flavor in his limited blind meter ( including a stall out dancing episode ) and the tone lands somewhere in the middle of it all . To me , that ’s the one big problem with Dual : There ’s just a little too much awkward humor that is cringey on purpose . break last a little too long , the production design can be unpleasant and run down . In a few scenes with both Sarahs , the feeling does n’t blend with the interesting , philosophical issues at hand , and the account hurt .

By the ending , when Dual finally gets to its point , Sterns has a cleared phonation and the choice made back it up . The journeying to get there is not always quiet but the futuristic world , provocative questions , and various perspectives on life make Dual work much more than not .
Dual had its world premiere at the2022 Sundance Film Festivaland was purchase by RLJE Films . It ’s hoping to release later this year .
