Edward Tufte is the guy rope who summed up the field of information design in one amazing book , The Visual Display of Quantitative Information . He ’s also a sculpturer , and last twelvemonth conceive this goliath flake steel piece , call Rocket Science . This is the elephantine olfactory organ of it . Want to see the rest ?
Tufte says :
Rocket Science is ~32 feet ( 10 cadence ) mellow and ~72 understructure ( 22 meters ) long , and is constructed from ~48,000 pounds ( 22,000 kilogram ) of rusting scrap steel . . . The RS correspondence about a key axis combined with the work party military headquarters in a capsule at the top is likely the best design for outer space vehicles ( Apollo , and the new post - Shuttle propagation of space vehicles carry humans — Constellation , Ares , Orion ) . Such isotropy is perverse to the design of the current Shuttle ( with its pretend airplane ) that has contributed to its inveterate difficulties . Better also to commit the crew at the top goal of the skyrocket , in front of the launching debris - rain shower in an unromantic capsule ( no landings by spaceman commander ) as is the case for Apollo and the upcoming Orion / Ares . Thus , RS has the symmetrical computer architecture for the vehicle of the future but RS is crudely assembled , amateur rocket salad scientific discipline .

Here ’s a pic of Mike Nitowski , the welder who carry out Tufte ’s design , looking like a red-hot commie proletarian .
And here ’s the exceedingly coolheaded darkness cast by the rocket , which Tufte says he ’d hoped for , but was surprised by anyway .
