That ’s the premise of Black Mask Studio ’s new comic The Skeptics — but as we ’ve hear from author Tini Howard , there ’s a lot more going on that just Russian superteens .
Written by Howard and with art by Devaki Neogi , colors from Jen Hickman , and lettering by Aditya Bidikar , The Skeptics follows the U.S. reaction to the cosmos of psychic - powered Russian citizens , as the government races to find their own psychics to anticipate them . But just when they remember they ’ve ascertain their prize , we learn that America ’s teenaged psychic are in fact juke , fooling the government — and later the world — into thinking they ’ve got superpowers , and trying to avoid the outbreak of World War III while doing so .

Tini Howard : The Skeptics take station in a slimly alternate 1960s Cold War America , where fear and paranoia have even begun affecting those among us we trust to be unprejudiced : scientists and academics . As a spot of an experiment , a frustrated and skeptical prof named Dr. Santaclara , decides she ’s going to show up these terrify eggheads by proving that they ’re so enfold up in their paranoia , that they can even be fooled by a pair of well - trained college student — name of Max and Mary .
When the college educatee do successfully fool the scientists , things escalate promptly , and Max and Mary rule themselves having to bullshit it so the whole earth makes it without slipping chief - over - loafers into World War III .
What drew you to the sixties , Cold War - era America menses to tell this story in the first place ?
Howard : I ’ve always been fascinated with that era , the Cuban Missile Crisis , how near we all do to blowing ourselves up . And there are so many thing that make a story from that time fun to tell – no cell phones , not a whole good deal of TV , everything retard down . Everything from news cycles to the simple relaying of a message become slow , and you may make your narrative so acute with so little . Plus , we all saw Mad Men , correct ? That early 1960s aesthetical is my everything . Mid - century foolishness .
The twist of Skeptics ’ premiss is that your protagonist are n’t the psychic superteens the US thinks they are , but con creative person play a long secret plan . What revolutionise you to go down this route with your lead fibre and subvert people ’s expectations about the series from the get - go ?
