The gravid tease for this week ’s sequence of Star Wars Rebels was that Frank Oz would be reprising his part as the vocalisation of Yoda . But what was truly interesting was not the income tax return of the old Master , but Ezra ’s own “ Luke on Dagobah ” moment and what it reveals about Ezra — and Kanan .
After Ezra finishes scream at the site of the skeletal bodies in the temple vestibule ( shaver , you ’re going to see much worse before this instalment ’s over ) , Kanan explains the peck : He sit in the antechamber while Ezra live off on his visit . If Ezra does n’t total out , he wastes aside out there like the skeletal Masters before him . Ezra ’s a little unnerved by the magnitude of this gesture , so it ’s not long before the Force gives him a vision of an impatient Kanan pick apart his approach shot to traveling through the Temple .
It ’s interesting to watch this as an grownup , because it ’s readily clear that this Kanan is n’t real . He ’s a manifestation of Ezra ’s own fears and anxieties . But I ideate that for children , it ’s actually pretty frightening when the Inquisitor appears to duel Kanan — and win . The hallucinate duel is actually kind of cool — I dig the Inquisitor ’s elegant fencing style of lightsaber battling , which then go totally off - kelter when he fires up the rotating hilt . But Ezra is dismayed when it ends with the blade going right through Kanan ’s chest .
But the death of Kanan is n’t the sorry affair Ezra witnesses inside the Temple . He stumbles into a visual sense of the Ghost , where his crewmates seem to be be gossiping about them . Ezra is certainly afraid of letting Kanan down , of someday becoming responsible for Kanan ’s decease . But his bigger fear is that nothing on the Ghost was genuine , that the family line he has border himself with is a fraud and that he ’s not loved but just tolerated ( by Zeb ) , desired for his top executive ( by Hera ) , or sympathize with for his youth ( by Sabine ) .
Well , perhaps that ’s his 2nd greatest fear . Just when he confronts these phantasma version of the crew , the Inquisitor reappears , and massacre everyone but Ezra . It come about off camera , but it ’s still shocking , particularly with Sabine ’s cries in the background . Ezra ’s greatest fear is that the Empire will take everything off from him again , just as they take his parent .
That ’s the material risk when it come to Ezra . He might not be susceptible to the Inquisitor ’s recruitment efforts , but he does have enough care and rage to tap into the Dark Side . And Kanan may not be able to prevent it from materialize .
as luck would have it , at least in this instance , Kanan has an ally .
We actually get an impressively light touch with Yoda in this episode . He ’s unquestionably there and definitely Yoda , but his unbodied front does n’t overwhelm Ezra ’s journey . Here , he functions as substitute instructor and Jedi therapist , lead Ezra through the negative emotions to find the positive emotions that the Ghost gang inspires in him . It ’s not just that they ’re good citizenry or that they give people Bob Hope , it ’s that that promise makes people , stimulate Ezra , finger alive . feel animated is a powerful sensation , and it gives Ezra something to hold onto in the face of hate and the desire for retribution .
But Ezra is n’t the only one who obtain a visit from invisible Yoda . Yoda ’s voice also intrude upon Kanan ’s meditation , forcing Kanan to face up to his doubts about his power to train Ezra . There is something lurk in Kanan ’s past , something that makes him question his worthiness as a Master . Kanan tries to ensure himself that training Ezra give him an opportunity to specify things right , but Yoda does n’t go terribly affirmative . “ I wo n’t rent him lose his way , ” Kanan promises , “ not like I did . ” Hey , Kanan , you ’re suddenly interesting .
For now , at least , Ezra is rise a worthy student . He emerge from the Temple with a lightsaber crystal and more confidently on his Jedi path . And , after all of his doubts about his place among the crew , everyone from the Ghost buffalo chip in the parts for his intercrossed lightsaber - blaster .
We end with Kanan assure that he can prepare his unconventional Padawan with his unconventional lightsaber in this unlawful situation . But he would be dopy if he did n’t consider Yoda ’s wrangle and the feeling of his voice . Kanan may be a instructor now , but he will still have a mickle to find out on this fussy journey .
