Can modern day magic ever really be “ cool ” again ? The art form has been reasonably brutalized by folks like Criss Angel and David Blaine , and yet Hollywood still call back they can presto - changeo modern perception into some kind of “ Oceans 11 with wizardly ” film with the coming Now You See Me . But can it work ?
Jesse Eisenberg plays the magician Atlas of the magic group The Four Horsemen , made up of Dave Franco , Woody Harrelson and Isla Fisher ( and if these names are any indication , no , the movie absolutely can not solve . Seriously . Atlas ? The Four Horsemen ? Was “ Kane ” take ? ) . Together they pluck a bank . The Four Horsemen , a wizardly super - radical led by the charismatic ATLAS ( Jesse Eisenberg ) , perform a pair of high - technical school thaumaturgy show , first astonishing audiences by robbing a bank on another continent , and then exposing a white - collar outlaw and funneling his one thousand thousand into the audience members ’ bank account .
FBI Special Agent DYLAN ( Mark Ruffalo ) is compulsive to make the magicians bear for their crimes - and to stop them before they pull off what promises to be an even more audacious heist . But he ’s drive to partner with ALMA ( Melanie Laurent ) , an Interpol detective about whom he is instantly suspicious . Out of despair he turns to THADDEUS ( Morgan Freeman ) , a famed magic debunker , who claims the camber heist was accomplished using camouflage and video trickery . One matter Dylan and Alma agree on is that the Horsemen must have an outside point someone , and that finding him ( or her ) is key to terminate the magicians ’ crime fling . Could it be Thaddeus ? Or Alma ? Or could it really be … magic ?
As press mounts and the world awaits the Horsemen ’s prominent final conjuration , Dylan and Alma race to determine an answer . But it soon becomes distressingly exculpated that staying one step ahead of these masters of illusion is beyond the skills of any one man - or woman .
