It looks like there ’s a reason HBO has n’t officially renew Game of Thrones for its 8th and final season , even though everyone and their grandmother knows it ’s coming . That ’s because the Maker might be considering more episodes , and HBO is crossbreed their fingers that it ’s true .
Last twelvemonth , showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss announced that Game of Thrones would only have 13 more episodes , split among two season . That means time of year 7 , which is currently being filmed , would have seven episode … and the last season would only have six . This is far down from previous GoT time of year , which have had 10 episodes each .

This news has n’t been ideal for HBO , since they were seemingly contented to suckle at George RR Martin ’s teat forever . While the internet has been completely supportive of the showrunners ’ decision , they ’ve been look for ways to continue the show ’s bombshell winner , like a possible prequel spinoff series with Martin . But luckily for HBO , it looks like Weiss and Benioff might be reconsidering the six - sequence duration for the serial stopping point , so they ’re waiting ( and hoping ) to see what they decide .
“ I remember they ’re endeavor to get a form of the season , ” HBO programming chairman Casey Bloys articulate . “ They always do what they think [ will give ] the best adaptation of the show . It ’s all about how many they ’re well-fixed [ with ] . But I ’ll always take more . ”
