Michael Caineis getting candid about whether he’ll return to the screen again.
The iconic English actor, 90, admitted in a recent interview withThe Telegraphthat his upcoming movieThe Great Escaperwill probably be his final film — despite having said he would retire in the past and still returning to make more movies.
“But I wasn’t 90 then. I am bloody 90 now, and I can’t walk properly and all that,” Caine told the outlet. “I sort of am retired now.”
“I was so happy to do it,” Caine said. “I just loved the character of Bernie. I thought he was incredible, and it’s so beautifully written. With Covid and all that, I hadn’t done a picture for three years, and I thought I was finished. And I suddenly did it – and had such a wonderful time.”

However, the role did come with its own challenges, especially as Caine can no longer walk without an aid.
“They gave me a very good walking stick, and I was able to do scenes that needed that. I’d just do them once, and then fall over,” he said with a smile.‘“But just one take, and that’s it. Forget it.”
Caine made anappearance on the red carpetat the premiere ofThe Great Escaperat BFI Southbank in London on Wednesday, taking photos with a walking stick and in a wheelchair alongside his castmates.
The actor previouslyalluded that he would retirein 2021 after the release of his movieBest Sellerson the BBC Radio showKermode and Mayo’s Film Review, saying that the film “hasturned out to be what is my last part.”
“Because I haven’t worked for two years, and I have a spine problem, which affects my legs. So, I can’t walk very well,” Caine said at the time, adding that “there aren’t exactly scripts pouring out with a leading man who’s 88.”
“And I also wrote a book, a couple of books, which were published and were successful. So, I’m now not an actor, I’m a writer, which is lovely because as an actor, you have to get up at half past 6 in the morning and go to the studio. As a writer, you can start writing without leaving the bed,” he added.
He’s written six books since 1984, with his most recent beingBlowing the Bloody Doors Off: And Other Lessons in Life, published through Hachette Book Group in 2018.
